Head Coach Phil Shoemaker
Head coach Phil Shoemaker completed his 30th season overall in NCAA Volleyball and 26th as a Head Coach in 2010.
During his tenure with the Alaska Nanooks (2000-present), Shoemaker's teams have been successful and established some high standards on and off the court.
He is the winningest coach in UAF volleyball history, and the Nanooks have earned the AVCA team academic award (3.3+ gpa) 2007-2009.
He was also the winningest coach at Wichita State (1983-1999) where his teams also earned four additional AVCA Team Academic Awards. He began his collegiate coaching career at the University of Missouri (1980-1982) as the assist for the Tigers.
Before coaching at the college level he served as Head Coach and Volleyball Commissioner at the Blue Valley Activity Center in his hometown of Independence, MO., where his teams claimed one championship and eight top five finishes in Amateur Athletic Union and USA Volleyball Junior Olympic National Championship Tournaments.
Through the years; more than twenty of his players earned All-American honors, and many, many more have earned All-Conference athletic and academic recognition.
In addition to coaching, Shoemaker serves as the GNAC representative to the AVCA DII National Head Coaches Committee, and is a member of the USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program Cadre. He has previously participated on numerous AVCA and NCAA committees, and, has served a coach and administrator for the USVBA Junior National Development Program, served as coordinator for the Mid-America Junior National Team, and was Assistant Director for the USVBA National Development Camps.
Shoemaker competed on collegiate and open teams for 20+ years, including 10 National Championship tournaments.
He played college volleyball at both Graceland College and Missouri as an undergraduate, and at Western Illinois while in graduate school. Shoemaker earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Park
Administration from the University of Missouri in 1975, and a Master of Science degree at Western Illinois University in the same field in 1982.
Shoemaker, his wife Diane, and their son Tanner reside in Fairbanks.
